Here's a potentially fine looking programme on the Beeb4 'Friday night is music night' thread about Ron Sexsmith.

One of the artists who I have almost seen on several occasions. Ahead of any festivals, I do the underlining thing on the schedules. Where there aren't "must sees", I tend to have two or three options ticked, dependent on other people when I am with any or where I am on the site or just how it feels on the day. He's always been there or thereabouts. I will probably watch the programme.

Ron
Da do.
He's such, such a special one.
He played in a Preston pub room for our mate Steve Henderson ( Mr Kite ) which at a push held fifty fortunate souls.
I persuaded him to sing Tom T Hall's ' Ships Go Out ' by typing the lyrics out before
the gig so he could have no excuse... This film really is him. And him is at The Barbican in a few weeks when
another Preston pub singer, the wondrous Jim White is also on the bill.
London calling ...

I'm going down ... to Lebanon, Tennessee.

Interesting to hear his music as I was not familiar but the programme seems interminable

It can go on till next Friday for me, Joe ! It's grand to have a bit of space in a film for a change.
And Is Daniel Lanois a distant relative of Ken Dodd ?
That first Ron Sexsmith album should be in almost every home !

Just played 'Strawberry Blonde' on my show. Sent shivers down my spine.

She was not the girl next door
But the girl from 'round the corner
It was at the tail end of grade four
When she came to school one morning
And all eyes were upon her as she took her seat
Her name was Amanda with pretty eyes of green
And hair of blonde, strawberry blonde --->
Skipping a few verses to
14? years later ( Others Songs is from '97 )
Time flies and years are piled
I'd forgotten all about her
When I saw her down the aisle
Of a streetcar with her daughter
Then I heard Amanda say as she got up
"C'mon Samantha, girl, this is our stop"
And they were gone
Two strawberry blondes
Thanks, Ron.

Tom T Hall's ' Ships Go Out ' is covered by our Ron on this genuinely priceless tribute album :

Following the links to the producer's notes will, like last night's film, give you a true flavour of the artist known as Ron.

I enjoyed this programme very much though I found myself thinking, 'I don't usually like this sort of sound' and yet I'd drift into a point where I was aware of enjoying it and finding the songs really interesting - that happened a few times. I suppose that's the thing - he's sounds a bit mainstream, yet he's well out there. Think I need to go and listen to a bit more of him. I liked him in the Songwriter Circle though I wasn't too keen on Healey and Gouldman - not sure I was very keen on the format of the show - Mr Russell always had plenty to say about the SC back on the old board - wonder where he got to!
