Half listening to Jazz FM (yes, I know but) last night as I cooked the family pasta et Cornish sardines, Miles' "Round Midnight" came on and I was struck, not for the first time, just how GOOD Red Garland was with that first quintet. Totally right and constantly listening. His playing behind Coltrane's solo is superb. Firm, assertive and slightly off-centre but giving Trane alll the room he needs.

Garland has next to no critical reputation now - he'za ..."cocktail" but I really appreciate him.

So there.
