Solti - Siegfried - on In Tune

I was stunned by the performance of the end of Siegfried on In Tune tonight. I assume it was the Decca recording. Birgit Nilsson - superb! The orchestra wasn't bad either. I'm not a great Wagner fan, but this was brilliant.

This is widely felt to be the 'weak link' in the Solti Ring, what with the casting plot unravelling during the recording sessions and Windgassen having to record his part at the last minute. The sound on my (1980s) recording is terribly hissy, too; I believe the 1997 remaster cleaned things up in this regard.....

The Solti Siegfried is superb, but the first CD issue was, I think, an AAD transfer. I had it, but lost it in a burglary, replacing it with the current dehissed version.

I've always felt that the Solti Das Rheingold sounds "thinner" as a result of dehissing, possibly because it required more processing. I think Decca should have left it well alone. But the three later operas still sound excellent.

The performance was allegedly from 1962 with the VPO. Seems to be the same as the Decca recording.

So much for schedules. I detected a quick burst of Die Walkure this morning on Breakfast about nine o' clock, and I'd bet it was Solti/Nilsson again. Not in the playlist though!

So the Beeb acts like airlines then? Do scheduled programmes get bumped? I think they must, and there's all the twittering etc. which also takes up time. Wonder there's any chance to hear music at all. I only heard that because I was on car moving around duty.

I was listening to the Solti Rheingold at the weekend (dehissed version) and agree, the sound quality is not good. There sounds like some bumpy edits too - eg track one into track 2, disc 1. Some wonderful performances though - Alberich and Fafner in particular.

I recall the sound quality being rather better, without being noticeably hissy. Sadly, I lost this and many other CDs in a burglary in 1992. :sadface:
