Well the Mosolov and Bartok 1st Concerto are exactly contemporary (both 1926-7).

Don't miss Gavrill Popov on Friday. Much underated composer. Plenty of samples of his Symphonies on You Tube to listen to.
Suffolkcoastal. Interesting that they are from the same year. Coincidentally, Bartok Piano concerto No.1 being broadcast tonight(Thursday) with Yefim Bronfman as soloist.
I heard a trailer for tonight's concert yesterday and it advertised Yefim Bronfman playing Bartok's Piano Concerto, as if he had only composed one! You tube has got some fascinating stuff at the moment I've recordings of Popov's 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th & Chamber Symphonies but didn't know the 3rd. Popov really is an impressive composer, he and Vainberg/Weinberg seem to be far and away the best among Shostakovich's contemporaries within the Soviet Union IMO.
I've been looking for CDs of Mosolov but they seem to be few and far between. Haven't yet been able to track down a recording of the Piano Concerto online. Does anyone know of one? Amazon have The Iron Foundry on a disc of Prokofiev but at £29.99!
Following the broadcast of DSCH's Columbus-finale this afternoon, there were two weird inaccuracies.
The piece is said to have been emerged in 1981, through Roshdestvensky's intervention.
That date must be incorrect, as I bought a Melodya LP in March 1980 (recorded the previous year), on which among other things music of Columbus can be found (conducted by Roshdestvensky).
Secondly, the opus-number of this work is 23, not 29 as we were told. the piece dates from 1929, hence probably the confusion.
Quite unusual, this type of errors in CotW.
.....................I came to the conclusion that this was one of the very best COTWs I have heard for many a year. This is the type of programme I hope to hear from R3 - informative, challenging and enjoyable music. I do not wish to be bombarded with every note Mozart, Handel, Haydn, etc. wrote.
