I agree, someone who is doing this review of Bruckner symphonies, surely just cant do justisce in 45 minutes. More like the whole 3 hrs of CD R would be a better option!!

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life(Berthold Auerbach)
I'm not sure where you found that quote but what I see on the relevant page is "09.30 Bruckner Symphonies: Julian Johnson assesses some recent releases of recordings new and old including the Eighth symphony from Klaus Tennstedt with the Berlin Philharmonic, Rafael Kubelik with the Bavarian RSO and Christian Thielemann with the Dresden Staatskapelle." [my bold]. Furthermore, the start time for the ensuing item is given as 10.45, so I take it that the duration of the Bruckner survey is to be 75 minutes rather then the usual 45.
I'm sure that within fairly recent memory the Barenboim/Berlin Phil set was the BaL recommendation for a complete set.
I'm looking forward to this. These recording sound interesting and I've enjoyed Julian Johnson's work on CD Review and Proms broadcasts in the past.
And he isn't Edward Seckerson![]()
I like this style of presentation of a BaL.

Sorry, but for me, this is a cliche-ridden meander.
Frankly neither can think much out of the platitude box. Such a shame. And AMcG is actually the driving force getting more and more impatient with JJ, and clearly knows his Bruckner discography far better than JJ, OR knows enough about radio to get his take in early so as to take the wind out of JJ's sails.
Feels a bit shapeless to me. Not sure WHAT they are trying to do.
I've heard nothing to dissuade me from my assumption in an earlier post, that they were short of a BAL reviewer, or someone didn't produce their 'Building a Library' analysis in time, and they just bunged Julian Johnson a handful of new releases and said: "fill in".
Doesn't have the focus to qualify as a "BAL", for me. I wonder if there will be a "BAL podcast" this week.

Just not sure about the basic thesis. There was always more to Bruckner
than the HvK recordings.
And there was more to HvK than monumentality.
So it's Janowski and the Suisse Romande. Always felt he was underrated here in Britain. And terrific to find the Suisse Romanders on such good form.
