Golly, thanks for those comments, Stanley: Gladys Cooper, Edith Evans, Peggy Ashcroft, even 'little' Deborah Kerr...

Yes, you're right about the 'stylised' dialogue - it's 'stagey' in a good sense - 'theatre'. That's what I was thinking of when I mentioned the audible footwork: it sounded like a stage production, which offers a particular kind of experience ('theatre') which is quite different from film.

    The Bagnold autobiog. sounds interesting.

You sure don't get to see (or hear) grande dame productions in New Jersey! Well done!

Pedalian? Last seen in Webster's 1913 Dictionary -
    Pe`da´li`an
    a. 1. Relating to the foot, or to a metrical foot; pedal.

Overdone sound effects of feet and walking? Trust me - you need that in a radio production to orient the listener spatially. Ditto doors and insect noises.

I was referring to the volume rather than the presence of the sounds, but, as I said, I think it gave the whole production a slightly 'stagey' sound which I felt sat well with the well-judged 'staginess' of the performances. I was just being picky.

Here are the two leading ladies:

What an interesting play! With the witty, stylised dialogue it managed to be amusing and moving at the same time. An excellent production and the acting was just right.

I didn't notice the sound effects at all but as ff says the whole production was quite stagey - and none the worse for that.
