Having recently acquired Jackie McLean's marvellous 1996 BLUE NOTE album 'Hat Trick' I was knocked out by the playing of Japanese-born pianist Junko Onishi - a new name to me. Apparently, she recorded several albums for BLUE NOTE in the 1990s. Judging by her playing on 'Hat Trick' they should definitely be worth searching for.

junko apparently took inspiration from US pianist andrew hill (who died in 2007), yet another really remarkable player who i've never heard of.

happily, there's plenty of andrew hill on utube ... imo junko would make a great r3 guest.
