    Profound,moving and wonderful stuff.
I'm no good at this music analysis game but these quartets (and 14 &15) seem like a sort of 20th century equivalent of the late Beethoven works,or am I talking nonsense?.
Do you know the Bartok string quartets, ER? They used to quite often get compared to the Beethoven lates. I have not yet got round to listening to those Pacifica performances of DSCH's 11th, 12th and 13th. Will resolve the omission tonight.

Me neither - but DSCH's quartets have been sitting on all my CD players for the past year or two, so I am somewhat familiar with them.

DSCH is much more lyrical, song-like and very original (in the sense that there is no way of knowing the direction the next note is coming from) ...errr Russian? LVB is extremely profound, extremely musical, and extremely analytic....err German? Therefore I would not compare these quartets with those of LVB.

But I guess in a general sense, these last quartets are also profound as were those of LVB.

I see all of DSCH's quartets will be performed at Kings Place shortly.

me, I can go straight into Gong, Triangle Solos and Japanese Noise music at any time of day or night !
Yes, consumption of beverages is an influence, much more than the consumption of food.

I am listening to 'Origins of Symmetry' by Muse, while I drink black tea and munch dried apricots (for your intrigue)

Yes I can see that too Bryn.
When I came back down to earth after the Shostakovich, I couldn't help thinking how much they reminded me of late Beethoven, can't explain why.

the DSCH quartets are among my favouritest things in the whole world ever !!

Had never really thought of them in connection with the Beethoven lates, other than as both being wonderful. Having a little listen to Beethoven op130 now just because.

Also had a listen to a bit of Arvo Part tonight, Tabula Rasa and a Symphony no3. Nice.

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf doing operetta on the EMI Icon discs. Superb wallow.

Shostakovich songs, 5Cds on Delos - virgin territory. Enjoying the discovery.

I have both of these performances, they are both very fine; have you played the Paul Lewis often? It's a great performance of a different kind. Do listen again if you can...

I borrowed the PL disc off a friend and have listened to it twice. It may be that I was disappointed because my expectations were high after having had so much enjoyment from his Beethoven Sonata's.
