DSCH is much more lyrical, song-like and very original (in the sense that there is no way of knowing the direction the next note is coming from) ...errr Russian? LVB is extremely profound, extremely musical, and extremely analytic....err German? Therefore I would not compare these quartets with those of LVB.
But I guess in a general sense, these last quartets are also profound as were those of LVB.
I see all of DSCH's quartets will be performed at Kings Place shortly.

Had never really thought of them in connection with the Beethoven lates, other than as both being wonderful. Having a little listen to Beethoven op130 now just because.
Also had a listen to a bit of Arvo Part tonight, Tabula Rasa and a Symphony no3. Nice.
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf doing operetta on the EMI Icon discs. Superb wallow.
Shostakovich songs, 5Cds on Delos - virgin territory. Enjoying the discovery.
Nancy Wilson + George Shearing Quintet
Beethoven - Diabelli Variations ( early Philips set )
Beautifull playing - still never heard a better recording of this music - eat your heart out Paul Lewis.
