As a whole I like the CD, though it is a programme more suitable for CFM IMO.

As I wrote, the solo players in the 2nd mvt of the Coats are IMO excellent - but a bit at a distance.
Which is not the case in the Enescu - there IMO you hear too much of the inner workings of the orchestra, and it has its limitations... (but you only realise it's a live recording because of the public applauding at the end).
I think the Arnold is spot on.
Pity thst Malcolm Arnold is lumped together wuth light music again as so often.

Once again I have to voice my concern at the CFM-isation of the BBCMM CD. There is a definite trend emerging here and as if to confirm it I note that next month's CD features Dvorak's 'New World' Symphony.

Time to look again at the subscription?

or wait for the CD's to turn up in charity shops.
Recently I have picked up Walton 1, Mahler 10, Rite of Spring, and the Berg Violin concerto all for peanuts . Hurrah !!

That makes two of us Petrushka

Possibly I won't be bothered to listen to the Dvorak.
The Turnage however will be listened to as soon as the magazine falls onto my doormat.

I haven't yet done more than sample the latest BBMM disc. There certainly seems to be a rather arbitrary choice of items from month to month, as exemplified by last month's Rachmaninov disc. Here we had a quite nice performance of the Symphonic Dances coupled with a frankly dull performance of the 2nd Concerto. Somebody in the organisation must have thought " Ah! Here we have a couple of Rachmaninov performances, let's lump them together"
I would prefer to hear more chamber music performances on these CDs, perhaps with young artists, in preference to the often rather clotted orchestral recordings. That said, there have been quite a number of fine issues over the years, but does it have to be such a bran tub?

I moved somewhat incongruously from Bernstein's Tchaik 3 to Tom Waits' Blood Money (his Woyzeck songs).

Why o why does the BBCMM team seem to be doing this CFM-isation stuff? Not good for 'classic music' at all!!

I'm getting fedup with the BBCMM too and have several recent unheard CDs. They are scraping around for anything, no rhyme or reason for choices.
