    Default Pre-Hear: David Bedford

I see that the subject of tonight's Pre-Hear is David Bedford.

Can anyone tell me if Steuart Bedford, conductor of tonight's performance of "The Song of the White Horse", and a quite interesting composer in his own right, is any relation? They look remarkably alike.

According to Wikipaedia they are brothers and the grandsons of Lisa Lehmann.

Ah, thanks Chris! I have confused Steuart Bedford with the young composer Luke Bedford, (b. 1978) - no relation.

last night, i was vaguely confused, even panicy. i couldn't understand where the hell r3 had vanished to, on the bedroom radio dial, more usually set to r4. i twiddled anxiously to the sound of ever louder nov 5th bangers, exploding like deep sea bombs, preceded by telltale aquatic bubblings. but r3 had apparently vanished, sunk without trace.

once i found r3, i stumbled by accident on 'pre hear'.... it provided stark contrast to what apparently preceded it: ...radio 5 + radio 3 ....conjoined: a get together for a public discussion about media objectives, overseen by a tory 'progressive'.... (as far as i could make out). i particularly recall a stone cold silent audience, in response to a panel question.... no sign of even a veneer of politeness, interest, or the usual obligeing, if irrelevant nervous response from ANY beeb studio audience member....just the sound of a deeply insulted radio-sulk, live on air

ironically, i had originally tuned to r3, ready for stockhausen's 4.33, or whatever it's called. to be broadcast later, on 'hear and now'. so, effectively, as regards radio silences, i got two for one - and by sheer coincidence & 'good fortune'.

david bedford returned things to recogniseable r3 normality, unwittingly saved the day, in allowing listeners adult status once again. his directly following the r3/5 'conjoining' patronisation exercise, though bedford didn't prevent the violent, angry explosions created by children outdoors, and nor did stockhausen, or alyn shipton!
