For those who have BBChd, a documentary about Rostropovich tomorrow evening. It was on BBC4 in October, I see....

Yes - go to the TV page, and at the bottom of the list of channels you will see "BBC HD"

I seem to be in a minority as I've collected off-air video recordings over many years and with the advent of DVD gradually recorded them with a much improved quality in picture and sound quality. When "Rostropovich - Genius of the Cello" was shown on BBC 4, I rummaged in the garage and found the video of "Soldiers of Music" (SR's return to Moscow with family in 1990) and a two-part concert. "Legends" with SR and Richter performing the Beethoven Cello Sonatas at the Edinburgh Festival in 1964. Also a linking documentary. (1995) "The Homecoming" featuring Solzhenitsyn's return and the political machinations. It all makes a fascinating double DVD set, including the recent Slava addition. In the same way, I've gradually compiled complete sets on RVW, Elgar, Bernstein, Coward and Peter Maxwell Davies. Omnibus, Monitor, Arena and the South Bank Show provided all this fascinating archive material over an extensive period. The neighbours quite used to my madcap cries of "Eureka" when I unexpectedly find, say, Ken Russell's SBS on RVW when he surveys the symphonies, accompanied by Ursula VW for guidance. A most engaging hobby in my retirement years.

You'll have to have an HD ready TV, Am51, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this.

Not to watch iPlayer on the computer - the internet connection just needs to be fast enough.

True - but to get the full benefit of HD one really needs a big one - 42" min.
