    Just listened to -
Bernstein: On the Waterfront - Symphonic Suite
    Korngold: Robin Hood Suite
    Rimsky Korsakov: Capriccio espagnol
Brian Irvine: Praise Aloud the Trees. From music nation this afternoon.

Enjoyable enough listening but I am in no hurry to hear Praise Aloud the Trees again.

A good idea, but I'm afraid it didn't work.

The Bernstein was a mess (The work is a bit of a mess anyway, out of its intended context as film music)

Korngold was interesting, but not specially memorable.

Capricio Espagnol had its moments, but the violin solos were far from impressive and oh dear that cello solo passage in the last movement was diabolical, hysterical and way above either band's preferred pitch.

I skipped the choral bit - I'd had enough.

Nice concerto, never knew that Shostakovich recently composed a third cello concerto .

In the broadcast the orchestra was too much at the background, but I think the performance was more than adequate for a premiere.
Announced on air as the 'National Chamber Orchestra', but billed in Radio Times as the 'Northern Chamber Orchestra'.

I agree with everything you say. Disappointing.
Clearly the reasons for having the two orchestras together were not musical and, as you say, it didn't work, musically.

Default The Cardinall's Musick : Monday

Today’s Live in Concert looks good.

The Cardinall's Musick, directed by Andrew Carwood, in Byrd: The Englishman, live from the Wigmore Hall

Any other people who have listened to this?

We seem to be the only ones, as it isn't Rachmaninov, is it

I listened to it, but can't really comment until I hear it again.

Raphael Wallfisch and the Northern Chamber Orchestra are going to play it again in May at Skipton (Yorkshire) (18th) and Macclesfield (Cheshire) (19th). I'll try to catch it at Macclesfield.

With the new 'rules' re the Performance board, I'm closing this thread so from hereonin people should start a new thread for each Live in Concert, or programme. This is because it was getting difficult to identify the various performances discussed under one thread.

If that causes all discussion on the live concerts to cease, we can always revert to the present slightly muddley system.

HS, keep things going, won't you?

I'll transfer the ongoing discussion (Hough/Rach 1) to a new thread, now on http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...n-Hall-Bristol

If anyone wants to comment on any of the other concerts in the above thread, PM me and I'll create a new thread.
