Being cryptic, the solution has nothing to do with Mahler.

"Broadcast" means spread around, i.e. make an anagram of the letter "N" (from "National" as in NHS etc ) + RADIO. The fourth letter of Mahler - i.e. L - is then introduced (i.e. put next to) this remix. "Ninth" is the non-cryptic clue which is an ORDINAL number.

    Well, I enjoyed it.

I got part of the way there but failed to follow through! I used to like doing crossword puzzles like this but the time just isn't there nowadays and you need a while to get into the mind-set of the compiler - by which time he/she had changed. My favourite clues were those in the Saturday 'Telegraph' prize crossword which were often easy to give you a start but were those laugh out loud ones. For instance this appeared in the Christmas Eve edition one year:

'He'll soon be on his annual package tour' (5,5)
“Every piece of music is a rehearsal of one’s life,” - Sir Colin Davis

Does the fruit begin with 'b', and end in 's' ... ?
