Tony's death last Monday has only just come to my notice.

He was one of the very best drummers in jazz and free improvisation that this country has produced, imo, and a thoroughly nice chap who will be sorely missed.

i have been looking at various utube clips of tony marsh playing, and hope that jez, or alyn do a tribute. or maybe re broadcast his r3 live session from only a matter of weeks ago. a chronological run down of all the things that tony marsh was involved in, over the years, would be very useful obviously.

If the beeb still has tapes of 7 rpm recorded in the early 80s, it would be great to hear those again. Iirc there were 2 broadcasts. 7 rpm was led by the bassist Paul Rogers; Tony was the drummer, and it had Simon Picard and John Rangecroft on tenor sax and tenor sax/clarinet, Ted Emmett trumpet, either Paul Rutherford or Annie Whitehead trombone, and Pete Nu piano. Quirky angular compositions, collective improvisation that was sometimes measured in mood, at other times wild energy, always uplifting and original.

Tony's funeral takes place next Monday. Paul Dunmall expects large numbers to be there.

The directions given in the link are not as clear as they might be, and for those who attended Elton Dean's farewell, it should be stressed, this event is NOT taking place at the same cemetary, but at the larger one situated a mile to the north-east. Manor Park main line station is located on the west side of Station Road (A117). On exiting from the station, turn left and continue north along the main road for half a mile, with the common to your right, until you reach the mini roundabout mentioned. Continuing in the same direction, the entrance to the City of London Cemetary and Crematorium is a very short distance further on, on the right. The nearest tube station, Wanstead, is a good 2 miles away.

A very large attendance at Tony's farewell - a sombre occasion - well over a hundred, possibly two - presided, like Peter Saberton's, by the British Humanist Associaton, who seem to have got this kind of occasion just right.

Many of this country's top improvising drummer/percussionists had come along and mingled: I spotted Eddie Prevost, Steve Noble, Mark Sanders and Roger Turner. Bassist Nick Stephens gave the main tribute address, Evan Parker and John Edwards a three minute duo microcosmic improvisation of the kind their trio with Tony nearly monthly at the Vortex for the past few years had finessed down to tiniest details, a track with March playing with Hary Beckett and Didier Levallet, possibly from "Images of Clarity", and then it was over, bar the minute's silence in memory. A wake had been arranged in a pub in Walthamstowe, which I did not attend.

"Listen closely, take a chance, keep going even if money's tight, and you'll find the real reward – that's why Tony was hip in the most meaningful sense," Parker says. "And he didn't need to play loud, or be loud, to get that intensity. It's like splitting diamonds or something. If you know exactly the right place to make the impact, you don't need to hit anything hard."

good to hear a brief tribute on monday's 'jazz on 3', and a number selected from tony marsh's gig last month.

BUT........... as per tapes and ** (from serial apologist's post above) which bbc programme might '7rpm' be broadcast on exactly? should the beeb rediscover the recordings................ there isn't a programme any longer! (that's THE problem with 'jazz library' going imv), there's no means, no opportunity, of a comprehensive assessment of jazz players, past or present.....just endless snatches, which anyone can achieve - by trawling utube, and wiki. who wants to wait for obituaries to find out about players .....grim, or what?!

besides, i suspect the remaining bunch of prickly so and so's employed at the beeb would keep the '7rpm' tapes 'under wraps', ....even at xmas! typically the very dullest time of year for 'edutainment'....the media genre that 'hep cats' presumably come under, because they challenge the status quo, are peceived a bit s!

I take it no animals were harmed in the making of the final clip, and the wrapping paper was re-cyclable!
