Default Charles Mingus ~ 90th anniversary

Charles Mingus would have been 90 on April 22, 2012. Here he is with Eric Dolphy in Oslo, 1964:

"Society is indeed a contract. It is a partnership in all science; a partnership in all art; a partnership in every virtue, and in all perfection. As the ends of such a partnership cannot be obtained in many generations, it becomes a partnership not only between those who are living, but between those who are living, those who are dead, and those who are to be born.”

How long now before someone comes on and says, "strange how he hardly influenced anyone who came after"?

Nat Hentoff has something to say on this which is a deserved accusation aimed at Wynton M for cutting Mingus at the Lincoln Centre

I enjoy jazz but my experience of it is limited. I only took note of Mingus through his collaboration with Joni Mitchell including their T S Eliot 4 Quartets project which never materialised due to his early death. Unlike some, I liked her Mingus album very much. I only have one of his albums - The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady - quite recently acquired. It is a compelling piece of work.

    you might consider these:

there are many other live recordings and studio albums but these are three of his finest

this is one of his finest smaller ensembles
