I've tried to send you a courteous private message, Hornspieler but you don't accept these I'm told by the system.

I have on several occasions added to your 'live concert' alerts with the full programme & performers, as I think that this is the mimimum that people need in an alert.

I had hoped that you might notice and follow suit.

However it was not to be, hence my post to you about courtesy.

If you feel that I have been discourteous to you in this correspondence let me know specifically and I'll consider apologising, if that's approriate

I appreciate your explanation and acknowledge your concern, but I must point out that I draw attention to broadcasts which have already been transmitted and not to alert people as to what is coming. Why then the need to list the programme content?

Those who listened "live" or will listen subsequently on the iPlayer will know what works are being discussed. Anyone who has not heard the performance cannot possibly agree or disagree with the opinions of those who have. We all have our own views of how works should be played and in my case I always strive to give an objective and professional opinion.

I hope that we can "bury the hatchet" here. We both, I am sure, have much knowledge and musical experience to bring to these message boards. Let us not squabble about trivia.

I assume that it has slipped your mind that you do both - here are three examples of your highlighting a forthcoming concert without giving the full details:

So you certainly do "draw attention to broadcasts which have already been transmitted" and you do also "alert people as to what is coming".

My point is quite a simple one - when alerting people to a forthcoming concert, I think it would be courteous if we all included either a link or the full details of the forthcoming concert, including the full programme, players, conductors, soloists, etc.

I thought your post number 6 demonstrated laziness and pique on your part. By post 5 the Borodin had been mentioned twice by others. If you were really interested in the thread, a couple of clicks would have got you to the Radio 3 schedule where you could have seen all, and probably have even listened to it on iPlayer.

Courtesy is a two-way street. When the dove is offered you just cannot resist rubbing in a point which just diminishes you in this reader’s mind.

I did listen, rather liking the rather neglected Borodin symphony but found my attention wandering as I don’t think Elder has really got to grips with it - certainly not an awe inspiring performance.

Is Borodin 2 really neglected, I think not, maybe it doesn't get the airing that Moldau does but I think it gets a fair whack of playings, or maybe I play it a lot on CD so I don't perceive its neglect.

I didn't miss much! What a load of Garbage! No wonder this Fantasy is never played. I've just been hearing it on "Listen Again"

I must agree!.......The pianist didn't exactly do the concert fantasy justice, even if it is a second rate piece !.Listen to Stephen Hough for a throughly alive version.
The Halle sounded poor. And the broadcast balance sounded more akin to the old Decca Phase Four balance with the woodwind being panned forward of the strings. The piano sounded recessed and dead.....or was that the pianist?..
Anyway..for the concert fantasy on the cheap try Glemser on Naxos or at full price Hough on Hyperion to get a better idea what Tchaikovsky would have wanted.

After the "Elder States_man" had finished his usual pre-performance oration, I settled down to enjoy one of my favourite Russian composers.

Oh dear! Some rather dodgy brass playing in the Prinz Igor overture. Never mind; a much neglected symphony to follow.

But I thought this a lacklustre performance. To me, the orchestra lacked incisiveness. They seemed to be picking their way carefully through the notes. Tired perhaps? Overworked? This was not the Hallé that I have come to know and respect all these years.

I decided to skip the second half but no doubt this thread will expand to include the whole concert and the reaction of others to what was, for me, a big disappointment.

Far from being 'a club within a club' I and others find PMs very useful. If a poster has expert knowledge of any one topic or musician of the past it is simple to private message them, with their user name. Sometimes a friendship develops, but no personal details are given away. Emails, on the other hand, are not always as private as they should be.

Did you hear the Hallé/Mark Elder concert on Wednesday night? I would be most interested to know your views on this concert, because you did mention quite recently a strong connection with the Hallé Orchestra going right back to the sixties.
