Sorry to see the Americanism "leads" instead of "conducts" creeping into the Beeb's publicity. What do they imagine the Leader does? Concert-masters I suppose!

missed the beginning of the Brahms, were we told about that odd timpani-accompanied cadenza to the first movement? a new one on me (not that that's saying much)

It's by Busoni; it's Isabelle Faust's preferred cadenza & she invariably plays it beautifully & IMO makes it sound absolutely convincing
