Problem with Rattle's Bruckner 9 - ripping for Squeezebox

I noticed something rather odd with the recently released Bruckner 9 from Rattle/EMI. I tried to rip it to ALAC on my iMac. It plays fine in iTunes.

However, when I try to listen using my Logitech Squeezebox, the last movement (movement 4) does not play.

I tried ripping again, same result.

Then I tried ripping again, but this time to AIFF. There are still problems. Something in that last movement seems to upset the Logitech Media Server, and I don't know what it is. I've done lots of CDs, and never had this particular issue before. I don't know whether it's the audio data which is causing the difficulty, or meta data.

I might gradually go over to using what I call "push" mode, driving the audio from iTunes on a Mac, rather than "pulling" it from the Squeezebox from a file/audio server, but this won't be for a little while yet.

It's enough to drive me back to actually playing this and other CDs on a CD player!

I suggest that you try to isolate where the problem is. Seeing how iTunes has in the past exhibited bugs (sorry 'features') I would most definitely try ripping with different software first.

This CD just arrived in the post from Amazon. Hope my systems accept that the reconstructed 4th movement is valid (who said robots don't have feelings!?).

There was no evidence that the rips I made had errors. They would play in iTunes. They would not stream properly from the Logitech Media Server. I will try other things to check this out, but it's not ultra high priority.

Am I right in thinking that if I rip the movement to WAV using iTunes, then do the same with EAC that the output files should be identical? I fear that this may not be quite a necessary condition.

Not necessarily. EAC reads each sector multiple times in order to make the rip as accurate as possible. My impression is that iTunes doesn't do this. It probably just takes one read of the CD and rely on error correction to deal with any problems. Incidentally EAC has a tool to compare two WAV files.
