    Default Liadov conducted by Svetlanov

    Recommended recently in IRR so I decided to see what I thought . It is on Melodiya and recorded in 1970.

    Only 48 minutes but wholeheartedly I agree with the reviewer. An astonishingly vivid and thrilling set of performances . Kikimora a highlight but terrific from start to finish .

    Liadov may have written little but what gems his short orchestral works are .

    Couldn't agree more. Inherited from my father (in vinyl form) - and treasured. Kikimora even finer than Mravinsky

    Yes I agree also - had the LP and now the CD from when BMG had the rights.

    It is an extraordinary record . It has made me completely reevaluate Liadov as a composer . The vital and thrilling performances make these short tone poems sound like masterpieces. Perhaps they are and it needs this sort of inspired advocacy to bring it out . My record of the year so far.

    Certainly interested in these works as I do not have any recordings of these works ( and hardly any Liadov ) in my collection. I assume the disc under discussion is :-

    I think my first introduction to Liadov was the strange coupling of Baba Yaga and Kikmora with Falla's 3 Cornered Hat, done by SRO Ansermet on an Ace of Clubs LP around 1963!

    I cannot stop playing this record . It is like being a kid again when you could only afford a record a month or so and played it over and over .

    The more I listen to it I wonder how influenced so many later Russian composers were by him . There appear to be echoes of Liadov everywhere .
