Last done as a BAL round about 2000 - I remember listening in the car. Can't remember who won. Wispelwey did quite well I think. My Rostropovich/Boult and Tortelier/Previn are both on LP!

Thanks, Amateur. I've added it to the list.

P.S. Thanks also to Barbirollians for the two recordings - now included as well.

I see I already have 15 versions ! Probably enough for me.

There is another to add to your list EA I think - the Yo Yo Ma/Maazel version appears to be available in a 2 CD set with his Haydn Cello Concertos .

I was very much intrigued by the mention of the Anja Thauer recording on the other thread and there is some thrilling playing by her of the REger sonata on You Tube ._ a tragic loss indeed .

The Thauer/Macal recording is my absolute favourite, as released on a DGG LP in the early 1970s.
That one and Rostropovich/Karajan (on DGG) are the only ones in my collection, even though this concerto -and certainly the middle mvt- is for me one of the most cherished and treasured works.

I have merged the new BaL thread (with Barbirollians' permission) with the earlier one. Many thank to Barbirollians for co-operating so positively.

I have great affection for the Spanish cellist Gaspar Cassado in this concerto. Originally a 1950's Vox LP with the Vienna symphony orchestra conducted by Jonel Perlea, this was my introduction to this work - a lovely warm performance which has transferred well to CD and now available from Amazon.

I realise now why I'm rather resistant to many celebrated performances and performers in this work. They are all far slower than the composer's indicated speeds according to Professor Smaczny. It doesn't seem to bother him, but I wonder if something a bit livelier will emerge from the pile.

All this guy can find to say about a lot of the performances is that they lack character. Many of these clever dick reviewers seem to be only good at is finding some axe to grind, or some small thing in the score by which they can show everyone what brilliant idiots they are. As if their opinion should be cast in stone!
