Thank you for the tip. I listened to it. I would have preferred more crickets and fewer humans but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

Well, fancy… I must be completely out of touch. Never heard of any of these things.

Incidentally, the Bell Cricket Temple is not in Tokyo but in Kyoto and it appears that the temple has successfully set itself up as a Japanese version of the Trevi Fountain (I’ve just Googled). Other than being a temple in Japan which is naturally to do with Buddha, the crickets seem to be a clever little addition to have its name put on the tourist map of Kyoto.

...to create a musical homage to an ancient tradition; a celebration of the sounds of crickets

The tradition, ancient or otherwise, is to do with seasons. Listening to the sound of crickets in July makes as much sense as decorating a Christmas tree in July.

I wonder where the production team actually went? Still there is always such thing as a New Tradition.

[ed.] …like that which is being made by all those tourists who visit there all year round to make a wish.

doversoul - most grateful for your contribution... yes, I somehow suspected that this was more a bit of 'orientalism' rather than anything seriously rooted in a deeper understanding of Japanese society & culture!

    ah well...

Used to swap tunes with that disc's creator, Mr G. He went on to do some production work with REM just before they packed it all in.
    Good man, that Tucker Martine.

I have been taken to see ‘authentic’ English gardens and had opportunities to sample ‘real’ English Fish & Chips in Japan. They were unique experiences. I suppose you could say, it is the interest that counts. It is slightly sad, though, that this is on Radio 4.
