I feel somewhat responsible for a deviation here, and thus remind the assembled company of the matter at hand, namely mercia's teasing:

    R to connect

    - Teddy Bond collaboration
    - Dennis & Carl ditty
    - written on the death of Mrs Wood (no. 1)
    - whimbrel music
"The isle is full of noises... Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not"
The Tempest, Act III scene 2 ll 148-9

(this is not my expertise I must admit)

    I'm happy to provide clues
once you know what a whimbrel is I think you'll be away

A whimbrel is a large wading bird. It has longish legs and a long bill that curves near the tip. It is brownish above and whitish below. In flight, it shows a white 'V' shape up its back from its tail. In other words, no idea

A curlew? But that is not an R. So, I retire and leave it to others to solve.

does the word curlew with another word beginning with R remind you of a musical work? I'm not sure there is anybody else around playing this game.
