Bloomin' eck Lat!, they're some lists - does the desert blues record in aid of Malian refugees not count as it's a comp? - the Bombino track on it is mighty awesome.

Thank you for your suggestions cloughie. The lists are intended to indicate a vague order of preference while also giving forum members a bit of structure to what has actually been released in 2012. The process has been informative to me too. I have tried to listen to as much as I can from each - there is only so much that can be done when 250 are to be selected - and then there have been reviews from a wide range of websites, any knowledge I have gained this year, and also a bit of instinct.

Definitely open to the idea of amending lists on the basis of other peoples' suggestions. However, I have only changed one thing so far. I brought in Plan B rather late for the pop etc list, mainly on the basis of a conversation we had on the jazz boards. While that has merit from a British perspective, I ducked out of a hip-hop list as I just don't take to most of it. I did see De La Soul live in 1989 and always enjoyed Stetsasonic, Dream Warriors and PM Dawn but there isn't a lot now that is of the "daisy age".

Kate Rusby is a noticeable exclusion so I will go back to her although the CD is a "different" collaborative affair. I admit I hadn't listened to Jeff Lynne. Nor indeed Rumer. I am not wholly opposed to semi-pastiche as long as it done very well. Anyone who can be a Karen Carpenter is more than ok in my book. I liked the debut record. As for the Cheryl Bentyne CD, it wasn't on my list of things to listen to although I would certainly defend Manhattan Transfer as they were in the earlier Laurel Masse era.

So, yes, I will listen to them all on the basis of your recommendations and do invite further suggestions in the coming days.

Rumer is often compared to Karen Carpenter but I think that is something of Dusty Springfield there also. I agree with you on the hip-hop list - there are some quite unpleasant sounds in that area - I wonder if some of HMV's demise is down to a percentage of the music-loving population dont wish to set foot in there because of the sounds therein. Anyway enough of the GOM in me - well done putting what you have together - as someone whose purchases mostly come from back catalogue there are some newbies to explore.

Many appear to be hearing Dusty Springfield in "this year's Rumer" but I am hearing Mama Cass:
