Thinking about it further, I wonder if this may have happened to me because I inadvertently clicked Mark Forums Read earlier this morning.

I find this a minor irritation, which I have not bothered posting about before. I will try to explain:

If I am on the What’s New? page, and want to go from the general to the particular and see just my subscribed threads there is no option to do this. So I have to change the page from What’s New? to Forum, and then click on the extreme right pink sub-option of Quick Links/Subscribed Threads. All well and good.

However, sometimes in the heat of the chase, because the layout looks pretty much the same at the top (I do know that the tab legends actually change from white to black), I don’t realise which page I’m on and quickly click on the extreme right pink sub-option when I'm on What's New? expecting to get my subscribed threads only to find I have clicked Mark Forums Read!

I know this is purely my fault for not looking where I click, but it might be nice to have a confirmation stage on Mark Forums Read, as this is an irreversible step.

I know, I'm a bit lackadaisical. I'm not too bothered if I miss a few posts - they'll probably turn up at a later date, probably tomorrow. So I don't subscribe to any threads. I use What's New? (which is the same as the (very) old BBC Latest Posts view). If I see something interesting, I click on it from that view. I return to it regularly and my Threads Read bold/unbold is working perfectly.

You may be trying something more nuanced which isn't currently providing what you want. I would have thought that clicking on Mark Forums Read would be causing the opposite effect from what Martin described since, as I understand it, his threads were marked Unread when he had read them, rather than the reverse.

This isn't resolved yet, but I think I'll wait to see what problems other people report before I change any settings.

    ff,

Yes, I agree that marking forums read would imply the opposite of this problem. It's just that it is the only 'unusual' thing which I had done today and I thought it might just be a clue.

Perfectly normal day today (no 'wrong' clicks) but the effect is still with me. I closed the forum window, came back later, and all the threads in What's New? were bold, including three or four which, when I went to them, were showing final posts which I had seen an hour or so earlier.

I suspect it might be something to do with your subscription settings. I don't mean to suggest it ought to be like that but I wonder how many people do use subscriptions. At least that would explain why there has been no flood of comments.

I wasn't wanting to stay up until midnight tonight, or I'd try altering the setting as suggested in Msg #6. Oh, well, I'll risk it now and see what happens ....

Edit: Well, it hasn't had the promised effect of returning all my threads to Unread. Dunno what it might have done for you. It might take a day to find out.

I've gone back to the previous setting because one thread disappeared completely from the What's New? list

    ff,

Just caught up with your last posts. I've just done the same test - Close window, go back in with a new window, and all my What's New? threads are bold. Two minutes ago there were about eight that I had caught up with, and were not bold.

So it is still happening. Not sure if subscriptions are relevant. This test purely entailed leaving What's New? and then going back to it.

Well, I've just navigated away from the site completely, off the forum, off the FoR3 site. Coming back, I have 18 What's New? threads and the four I've read are shown (i.e. light/not bold). There can't be a general setting which needs adjusting. Is it something in your browser?

Let me give an example: the FoR3 homepage navigation bar, with dropdown menus, works fine (for me) in Firefox, IE, Safari and Camino. But in Opera the dropdown menus don't work. When you move the cursor to select a menu item, the menu closes. I've tried to run this past Opera but without getting an explanation. So the problem could be either your browser, or a setting on your browser. Can you try a different browser?

My menus drop down OK. (At least Community, Forum Actions and Quick Links do, I don't think the others have drop-downs?)

I haven't any immediate access to a different browser, and I'm not really that worried about the effect, as it works all right within a session, and I normally keep the window open but minimised. I was just trying to confirm that the OP wasn't alone (have we heard from him again?) and maybe help investigation by trying to report my exact symptoms.

I meant the dropdown menus on the FoR3 homepage, not this forum, and only if you are using Opera. My point was to illustrate that browsers do have occasional incompatible features with certain sites. The labour involved in tracking down what it is that Opera doesn't like about those particular dropdowns is outside our technical competence. As long as all other browsers behave properly, we would regard it as a bug with Opera, not with our site.
