If an important criterion is that the performance should blow your socks off, I have to report that my slippers wind up behind my computer and my socks don't come back to earth for at least 4 hours whenever I watch this clip
Gee wizz, that is a tremendous clip!!! Thanks!

PS I see what you mean about Miles Malleson. Bychkov really has an ideal face for CD, doesn't he....

Despite already having 11 versions of the work (I can't help it ) Saturdays BAL could well prove expensive.

I also have 11 versions, EA, but I would think it highly unlikely that the chosen version will be one that neither if us has. I will listen with pleasure on Saturday rather than worrying about the state of my bank balance. This has already been dented after recommendations on here and it's still only January!

Perhaps I'm showing my age, or alternatively my relative youth, but....who the heck is (or was) Miles Malleson???

I have (and like) Blomstedt's 1990s recording with the San Francisco SO - maybe not as exciting as some, but very well played and pretty good recording too. I believe Kazimierz (sp?) Kord also recorded it with the Warsaw PO more recently.

I enjoy an occasional spin of Karajan/BPO's live May 1972 RFH perf. on Testament.

A difficult choice. Having said that, I've only got three versions - Haitink, Wit and Dresden/Kempe. I suppose, of the three, Haitink is the one I'd least happily be without. And it has the best cover!
