This week's 'The Essay' on R3 is a repeat of last year's series of conversations between Michael and Olivia O'Leary.

I followed a link in the Guardian obituary and found a BBC programme, 'Where Poems Come From' about Michael - I watched it this morning and very glad I did...but sadly today is its last day of availability on the i-player. Worth the time if you can manage it before 10pm this evening.

Thanks you, Padraig. I found this piece very stimulating, informative and moving. A sad loss. RIP Michael.Originally posted by Padraig View PostMichael Longley 1939 - 2025
I intended to mention only the short poem Kindertotenlieder as an example of his poetry, but the full article may appeal in its own right and therefore I have included it.

Could a host please add his dates (1939-2025) to the thread title?

One of Radio 3's most treasured programmes. In another part of the wood, I listened last week, via BBC Sounds, to Anthony and Cleopatra on Drama on 3 - so very good. If, dear reader, you haven't yet signed that petition on Drama on 3 to be found elsewhere on this forum, please do so! Without exaggeration such things as Drama on 3 sustain our lives and help us get through.Originally posted by Forget It (U2079353) View PostToday's The Verb is dedicated to Michael Longley

"The deaths of children – always “innocent victims” – epitomise the shame of political violence."

Really sad to lose such a treasure
Two pieces from the Guardian:
Part of a gifted generation of writers from Northern Ireland, Longley also gave years of service to the province’s arts council
