Very good Panorama tonight investigating the Trump administration's connections with American Tech leading lights, going back to the beginnings of the association with Bitcoin. We should all be afraid, be very, very afraid.

Thanks LMcD. Think I've sorted it after some head-scratching. My 14 year-old "smart" TV can receive live TPTV on Freeview ch 82, but the option for Encore on the red button doesn't seem to be available. I don't have Freesat, but fortunately the TPTV app is downloadable to my streaming stick. I'll see how it goes with the free version initially, though the ad-free option seems pretty reasonable at £4,99 pcm.Originally posted by LMcD View Post
It offers a 7-day 'Encore' catch-up service which Freeview viewers with connected TV sets can watch via the red button and others online. I watch on Freesat channel 306,

Back in May Mrs C and I took a trip to Stockholm and very excellent it was. The highlight was the magnificent Vasa Museum, certainly the most spectacular Museum I ever visited. It was good to be reminded of it by this documentary on BBC4 the other night. Very interesting - filled in a quite a few gaps in this fascinating story for me.

The pay-for programmes accessible on Encore usually seem to come up as freebies for TPTV basic members the following week, when I shall be watching part 2 of The Doll, and will continue thus with this item rather than trying to remember to tune in on Tuesday nights. It's a shame they've chosen to have this pay conditional addition to what was a free membership only a year ago. And I've noticed an increase in the amount of advertising on what had been my reason for joining, The Footage Detectives - including one for these same "specials". Previously it was just a couple of minutes of introductory ads, then one midway through, and last week another. Maybe they're running short!Originally posted by Maclintick View PostThanks LMcD. Thanks for the heads-up, S-A. I've only recently become acquainted with this channel, but the length of preliminary ads before one's selection starts is rather off-putting on the free version, albeit that the ad-free option seems a tad expensive compared with basic Netflix, by comparison, considering that TPTV is mostly old content...Originally posted by Serial_Apologist View Post

Quite! I use the ad breaks as an opportunity to pop across the corridor to make my bed, or along to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea.Originally posted by Maclintick View PostThanks for the heads-up, S-A. Over the last few years I've really been enjoying many of the programmes which the BBC has unearthed from its archive and been showing on BBC 4. In addition to numerous single plays and series which I'm pleased to have had the chance to see again, there have been a number which I missed first time round, including one of last night's offerings - 'The Picnic' with Billie Whitelaw and Iain Glen. I suppose it's best described as a psychological mystery with an 'open' final scene which leaves the viewer to decide whether things are going to be alright or somebody has made a terrible mistake!

Isn’t it just! Only 4 episodes in and any series recently is in its shade. Impeccable funOriginally posted by vinteuil View Post... the new (third) series of The Diplomat.
Quite the best thing on the telly for a very long time ; ridiculous and wonderful

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Do we have an Unrecommended ..... thread?
My reason for giving a thumbs down to both The house of Guinness (binge watched over a few nights, partly as I'm a bit of a fan of James Norton) and Death by lightning (first two episodes watched last night) is the (to my mind) completely unnecessary and surely inaccurate use of the f word so often, especially when women are present in the action.
Does this merely represent a failing/inadequacy of the scriptwriters? I can't imagine Netflix's US audience being that impressed.

For me that's something that outweighs any positive features of a programme and more often than not leads me to switch off.Originally posted by Pulcinella View PostDo we have an Unrecommended ..... thread?

I was thinking of trying the 2 programmes which you mention, but perhaps they can be hit into the long grass, at least for the time being!

On the other hand Aidan Turner as the supposed MI6 hunk is a real let-down : whenever he's on scene the atmosphere just drains away...

I am curiously unconcerned about the swearing - and I suspect the rough-and-tumble of a Republican Convention in the time of Ulysses S Grant would have had no shortage of language unfit for the demure...Originally posted by Pulcinella View PostMy reason for giving a thumbs down to both The house of Guinness ... and Death by lightning (first two episodes watched last night) is the (to my mind) completely unnecessary and surely inaccurate use of the f word so often...
We gave up on The House of Guinness before the end of the first episode because it was such rubbish
Apparently in Ireland it has met with derision (the accents!) and despair ( the stereotypes, the cliches, the factual errors)
We are enjoying Death by Lightning (enormous fans of Matthew 'Wambsgans' Macfadyen here)

Quite enjoying Death by lightning too; no expense spared on the extras (numbers, costumes, etc) is there?Originally posted by vinteuil View Post

I've just realised that the telegraph messages would presumably all be in CAPITAL LETTERS. Maybe that's what the current incumbent is emulating.

Rightly or wrongly, I've always taken excessive use of the f-word to be evidence of a deficient vocabulary, although I do realize that said frequency of use also means that it has now largely lost its original meaning and power. It's just one of a number of words that are now grossly over-used and arguably devalued as a result - 'iconic' and 'legendary' being just a couple of examples.Originally posted by vinteuil View Post

Anyhoo, the central character in Death by Lightning - the assassin Guiteau - was notorious for his bad language : (from wiki) -
"Guiteau became something of a media sensation during his entire trial for his bizarre behavior, which included him frequently cursing and insulting the judge, most of the witnesses, the prosecution, and even his defense team, as well as formatting his testimony in epic poems which he recited at length/ ... / After the guilty verdict was read, Guiteau stepped forward, despite his lawyers' efforts to tell him to be quiet, and yelled at the jury, saying, "You are all low, consummate jackasses!", plus a further stream of curses and obscenities before he was taken away by guards to his cell to await execution"
