    Mondonville

I wonder how many Early Music enthusiasts have heard much music of Jean-Joseph Mondonville? He has become largely overshadowed by his contemporary Rameau, but his works are well worth a listen. This morning I have enjoyed the excellent William Christie recording of four of his nine motets, the rest of which are also available on CD. Then there are the stage works - I have 'Titon et l'Aurore' and the marvellous 'Isbé'. I have yet to get my hands on 'Les Fêtes de Paphos' as it currently commands high prices.

This has been a favourite baroque recording since it appeared:

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oh yes, I've had that for a long while, too. It's superb. Try the motets if you don't know them.

To compensate for the fact that on referring to my collection I found the CD I was thinking of was a work by Pierre de Manchicourt who lived some 200 years earlier, here's Mondonville's motet Nisi dominus:

(The Manchicourt work was his Missa Cuidez vous que Dieu nous faille)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

So pleased I'm not the only one! He has the tenderness and charm of Rameau, but definitely his own recognisable style.
