Just seen that Warner are due to issue a 21 CD set of all David Munrow's recordings, with original sleeve covers. Long overdue. Haven't seen any prices yet.

DM due for an R3 revival, surely ? Should fit well with current concern to widen appeal of, for want of a better term, ‘classical music’ and Things R3
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

This was a previous attempt.Originally posted by MickyD View PostI hope there will be at least some sort of tribute, as I've just learned that the box set is being released on the 50th anniversary of his death.
As Radio 3 re-run episodes of their landmark music programme for children, Pied Piper, we remember its presenter - early music specialist David Munrow
I found myself groaning at various points in reading that article, not least because of the extent to which R3 has gone backwards when it comes to Early Music, struggling to find airtime/recording capability even for Baroque, other than limited Bach. If it weren't for the EMS it would be as if, for the BBC and R3 in particular, David Munrow had never existed.
His death is something that still pains me; I can remember all too clearly the beautiful sunny morning when a fellow student came into the room and told me, with disbelief, that he had read the notice of death in the paper, and that the phrasing meant that it was almost certainly suicide.

I don't remember any comments or reflections from close colleagues and friends of Munrow about his death. It would be nice to think that some of those were to be collected together in the notes within this box.
I couldn't agree more with Odd one out about the lamentable coverage early music now gets on R3. It's so sad when you think of how much they contributed to the movement in its golden days.

Perhaps you're referring to the solitary weekly 'Early Music Show', but HIPP performances and recordings feature every day on Radio 3 in almost all their classical music programmes. It hadn't occurred to me that there was a shortage. Far be it from me to start a controversy, and I'm glad to see the announcement of the Munrow box set, but for many years I've regretted that whenever mid-18thC or earlier music is broadcast it's always on period instruments and in HIPP style (no vibrato, etc). I think there is a case for other interpretations.

Radio 3 did a "David Munrow" special 15/5/1977 on the first anniversary of his death.Originally posted by MickyD View PostI don't remember any comments or reflections from close colleagues and friends of Munrow about his death. There are at least two EMS programmes on him - 30/10/2004 (rpt 30/10/2007) & 19/2/2017 (rpt 5/1/2020); and a "Music Restored" from 30/7/1999.
These programmes and many Pied Pipers are in the BBC archives and it would be fitting tribute if some of them could be rebroadcast.

Thank you for the research, Aunt Daisy. I'd love to hear that programme from 1977 - Hogwood, Bowman and even Bill Oddie! I'm intrigued as to what connection he had with him.
I've just looked at the contents of the box and realised that discs I knew were missing - then I remembered that Munrow did a lot with Argo/Decca. It would be great to have a similar compilation from Decca, too.

Presto have themselves issued three Decca CDs; I don't know if this means a Decca compilation would be less likely as a consequence though.Originally posted by MickyD View PostThank you for the research, Aunt Daisy.
