Suggestions to just turn the thing off were refused as company policy was to have constant ambient 'music', and it wasn't until infuriated customers made their feelings known that anything was done. I think there has been a general agreement amongst the big chains not to start so early now. The local Lidl store, which has taken to the noise option recently also annoyed its customers when the volume got too loud - I gather a few customers did abandon shopping and leave. I've been using Lidl less and less for various reasons but the presence of ambient 'music', aka unnecessary and unwanted noise pollution, is another deterrent.
Have you tried shouting because you can't hear what anybody is saying (especially at the checkout)?

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I've had the afternoon show on for a bit(tuning out much of it, hadn't realised there would be quite so much unlisted filler) and just had a blast from the past. A folk song type track suddenly had me singing along, dredging up memories of school Christmases from well over 50 years ago, specifically French lessons, when we were taught "Il est ne le divin enfant". Looking at the lyrics now, I realise that the grammar was way ahead of what we had covered in our first year at secondary school, but I imagine we were given an idea what it was about. The German equivalent was "Oh Tannenbaum", encountered when the choice of Latin or German was made in the third year. No idea what, if anything, the Latin lot did - perhaps Adeste Fidelis?

From Year 3 onwards, I was encouraged to study German in addition to French and Latin, so I managed both 'Stille Nacht' and 'Adeste Fideles'.

For once things fell into place this afternoon. I was around, checked the listings(without much expectation it must be said) and saw that not only was Bach B Minor Mass being broadcast, but that I had timed it so I could come in at the start, ie no waiting through the beginning items to catch an unspecified time of broadcast.
The performance was superb, and I'm so glad I was able to listen.

I enjoyed their Carissimi oratorios earlier in the week, but I though the Bach a little lightweight and lacking in the deptth and grandeur I associate with this work.

Today I was again around and able to listen and, having looked at the schedule, decided to turn on. Completely thrown by hearing Bach Brandenburg 3 rather than Schubert Impromptus. Twenty minutes later Bach finished and after some wittering, gushing and promo stuff from the presenter the Schubert appeared. Why wasn't the Bach listed? I didn't like the performance and was considering turning off, not just muting, having decided that the schedule was obviously rubbish so there was no point hoping for the other things I was interested in hearing to appear.

The ethos of the Third Programme and Radio 3 when it began was based on the fact that that listeners were selective. They were told what would be broadcast and at what time, and the listener chose to listen when there was something particular they wanted to hear; and audiences would be small. But 'entertainment consumption' isn't the same now. Push out as much as you can, all the time, and someone somewhere will tune in and listen to whatever is on. because they want something to listen to.

There's a small-print disclaimer at the end of the listing in the Radio Times on Mondays: 'Classical Live content is subject change prior to broadcast'.
Today's Radio 3 schedule shows the Bach as the first item played.

In the 'Music Played' section, so after the event (and well into the next item)which isn't much good when I was looking at what was listed before the event!
I know there is also a disclaimer somewhere that says in effect the list isn't complete, for reasons which have never been satisfactorily explained although various suggestions have been made in these parts over the years. I just think it odd to start the programme with quite a lengthy piece which isn't listed.
