In which movements of the 4th is MA's version most strikingly different from Andrew Penny's (or vice versa)?
    MA: 18'48", 5'40",18'40", 11'03"
    AP: 13'00", 5'01", 11'36", 7'59"

    Another comparison (Handley): 12'38", 4'57", 11'46", 8'05"

        This currently on

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Klaus Mäkelä (conductor)

is shaping up to be a mighty fine performance. The RCO string’s beautifully caught by an exceptional sound balance.

Penny Gore's departure seems to have gone unremarked. She paid a fond farewell to her listeners earlier this week . I don't know if it's just retirement or if she's fed up with the brave new world of Radio 3. At any rate, I regard her as the last of the traditional R3 voices. She will be much missed.

Was it Fiona Talkington on Tuesday (~2:50:00 in) "14th of November 1989..."? I'd missed that poignant farewell (I usually avoid daytime R3).
As you say, a real R3 voice, she will be much missed.

OOps. Apologies for confusing the two ladies. It was indeed Fiona. Same comments apply though! She and Penny are the last of the old guard .

I missed that announcement. Is Penny going from TTN as well? I agree she will be much missed.

Ah, just seen the update, so I guess Penny is still on TTN!

Indeed - a Penny for our thoughts.

Grateful for small mercies... at last, some music by Arnold Cooke on Radio 3, and moreover a work I haven't heard before, his clarinet sonata, in today's Wigmore Hall recital.Thank you, Michael Collins.
