Yes that made me flinch - the first time I made a special journey to London for a concert in my teens with a schoolmate was in the late ‘70s to a Muti/Philharmonia concert at the RFH… heaven knows what the programme was, but the charismatic swagger of the man, the attitude & whirling black curtains of hair (such a contrast with the white-haired old men on the covers of my parents’ LPs!) made a great impression.

At last, with holiday guests departed, I’ve caught up with my TV recording - he’s still got it, the decades and bags under the eyes notwithstanding.

What a Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka … that’s the performance that grabbed me at first hearing
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
