I liked the George Walker piece: a spirited work , perhaps the 21st century equivalent of Janacek's Sonata '1.X.1905'. The only other work by Walker I've heard is his early 'Lyric for Strings' which gets a few broadcasts.

Maybe the Barbican acoustic(s) dampened things, but I thought that both the Bernstein and the Walton needed more bite: the Walton particularly needed more 'con malizia'.

I admired the angular, charged intensity of George Walker’s angry Symphony. Its thrust and dynamism were of the highest order . Powerful use of brass and percussion but the sonic stage was never cluttered. Its antecedents for me were the first movement of Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements and the opening furious movement iof Honegger’s bitter late symohony ‘Di Tre Re’..

An impressive work, remarkably cogent and fresh for a 94 year old.

A quite magnificent performance of Mahler 3 has just ended .

The playing of the BBC Philharmonic first trumpet in this has been truly exceptional…But really everyone
          Bravi. Wonderful..

…..not just me who thinks so it appears …

John Storgårds conducts his BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in a profoundly moving account of Mahler's vast Third Symphony.

The recent “upgrade “ to my 50 year old system - replacing ‘73 KEF Cadenzas with Harbeths is looking like an all time best decision….

I cannot recommend this performance too highly ..l

Agreed, the sound was exceptional, and the playing tremendous....I was just commenting to my wife that the string sound of this orchestra in the final 'Angel' movement could stand comparison with almost any other. Most enjoyable.

Yes indeed . The sumptuousness of those final bars was remarkable. I wanted it to go on for ever …

Did I say 'Angel' movement? The last is, of course, 'What Love tells me'.......but the 'Angels' 'Bim Bams' were delivered convincingly too!

Also agreed. I follow wherever Storgards goes! (With the BBC Phil in particular). Not in person though, as I'm in East Anglia.
