Hmm....strange really, I thought Prophet Bird was over pedalled, and lacking in character...but I've still got Richter's classic recording in my ears, from listening to it time and again when I was young.Originally posted by Ein Heldenleben View PostEric Lu is playing Schumann’s Waldszenen very , very well indeed. Abschied so beautifully done…not over pedalled ..Perfect really

Anyone catch the performance of Brahms Requiem this evening (Monday 7th November) by Ensemble Pygmalion, conducted by Rafael Pichon? Concert performance from the Concertgebouw last November and I wasn't able to give it my full attention. However, lovely choral sound, good soloists - Mari Eriksmoen (whom I had heard before) and Andre Schuen (sorry, not good with accents) with a period instrument ensemble established by the conductor in 2006 when he was a student. Some quite fast tempi in places but seemed to work.
Will try to 'listen again' although I never find that as good as listening 'live' (or its effective equivalent).

yes apart from a couple of minutes at the start - thought it was an excellent performance - much lighter in texture than the usual ones of the Requiem - it was almost as though the heavy Victorian drapes had been pulled of the furniture to reveal the excellent craftsmanship beneath.Originally posted by Historian View PostAnyone catch the performance of Brahms Requiem this evening (Monday 7th November) by Ensemble Pygmalion, ...

I only heard the last third but I too was struck by the lightness and clarity. Brahms isn't a first choice composer for me and the Requiem is a piece that sometimes seems to verge on the wallowing in rich sounds but not much else. I have sung it so know there is more to it than that; it was good to be reminded of that. There was a performance earlier this year(can't remember any details) which also took the lighter approach and I thought then that perhaps it was time for a rethink of performance practice for the workOriginally posted by Frances_iom View Postyes apart from a couple of minutes at the start - thought it was an excellent performance - much lighter in texture than the usual ones of the Requiem - it was almost as though the heavy Victorian drapes had been pulled of the furniture to reveal the excellent craftsmanship beneath.

A few years ago there was a TV performance by the Sixteen with Brahms' 4-hand arrangement of the orchestra part played on a nice old Bosendorfer. It was a revelation to me. I've always felt that, although he was a thoroughly accomplished orchestrator, Brahms ideally would have preferred to avoid the orchestra, but felt he needed to write orchestral works.

The pianissimo at the end was absolutely extraordinary. I listened to the whole performance again today . Marcus Stenz is clearly a force to be reckoned with.Originally posted by Alison View PostDecent audio quality too picking up lots of inner detail. Rarely has (iv) sounded so impassioned in my experience.

Looking forward to next Thursday's concert. Fascinating programme but stretching Debussy's Jeux to 35 minutes?!
