Glinka is a composer I associated with TTN: in the days when I listened to it, his overture to Ruslan and Ludmila used to be the most frequently played piece.Originally posted by AuntDaisy View Post
Perhaps TTN will start broadcasting longer operas again (e.g. 3+ hours of Glinka's "Ivan Susanin")...

For me, that overture is forever the theme to "Oscar's Orchestra", which the boys, when young, used watch on TV.Originally posted by mopsus View PostGlinka is a composer I associated with TTN: in the days when I listened to it, his overture to Ruslan and Ludmila used to be the most frequently played piece.

Not quite sure what to make of John Shea's Twitter post.
It's good news that TTN listener numbers have increased by 44%. Or, is it a sign that R3 daytime schedule changes are nudging more people towards TTN?
John Shea @johnshea63
Our latest increase in listeners includes a 44% year-on-year rise for @BBCRadio3 Through the Night. I’m thrilled for everyone who works on it. Taking you all on this nightly journey around Europe is still - in every sense - a dream job! @HoskinLizzie

I'm certainly listening to TTN more than I used to. It has been pointed out elsewhere on the Forum that items from non-European countries such as Canada, Australia and South Korea, which have a relationship with the EBU, also feature regularly.

See the writing? R3 Old Style becomes a nightime only station, available on Sounds. Six hours non-stop - as good as the old Third Programme ... Hope Nick Armstrong has noted the description of this Sunday's programme in the online schedule. Ah, memories! :-)It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

When I was a regular listener there were a great many Canadian performances. We imagined an invented ensemble, the 'Saskatchewan Strings' which populated the airwaves in the small hours with neglected but worthwhile works.I'm certainly listening to TTN more than I used to. "...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
