Amid all the excitement (? ) about Honeck’s BAL success with Brahms 4, there was an absolutely cracking Shostakovich 5 with him at the helm in the early hours of this morning (starts about 45 minutes in):

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes Nick, it was a good 'un. Usually I turn on TTN at low volume to lull me to sleep. This one I managed to stay awake to the end for!

(I also wanted to hear what was honeckst )

Yes, such a tight, concentrated performance, brilliantly played and recorded. The pacing and voicing were just how I hear it in my mind’s ear, not least the precise timp sound which adds greatly to the whole effect imho

The sound quality really has improved significantly on R3 in recent years hasn't it? I was particularly struck with the tuba growling away in the 2nd movement. Roger Webb would have loved that putting his Quads through their paces!

Just checked the off-air & Sounds. Similar problem to September 2024's TTN post #1145.

"Left channel..." about 2 minutes silence and finally Petroc announced "This is BBC Radio 3, we're having some problems which are preventing us from continuing with our scheduled programmes at the moment. We hope to restore normal service as soon as possible. But, in the mean time, here is a sequence of music...".

And poor John Shea sounding as if he'd just rushed over...
"My apologies for the technical problems that we've been having in bringing you BBC Radio Through the Night. I'm told that we can, now, join the programme, presented by me, John Shea, in recorded form I should explain, and here is Tenebrae conducted by Nigel Short with JS Bach's motet Jesu, meine Freunde...."

Tenebrae perform Bach's iconic motets together with James MacMillan's sacred music.

Update: I've reported the fault via this overly convoluted webpage.

It's available to listen to on Notturno via Swedish radio, starts ~2 hours in.

If it helps, here's a link to the audio - it might play in your Browser. Bach's "Komm, Jesu, komm" starts ~2:01:00 in (after the tolling bell).

Worth persevering: the penultimate item is an excellent performance of possibly the most underrated piece by Poulenc, Les Animaux Modèles, under Georges Prêtre - preceded by Berwald’s delectable Septet

Beethoven 6 on 25 November at 0117: I chanced on this and was surprised to find an (to me) unusually fast tempo in I and (I think) II that worked for me. Conductor was Kent Nagano [and The German Symphony Orchestra, Berlin].

EDIT: Re-listening now, there is nothing very exceptional about the tempi (although it is very beautifully played). I put the above original comments down to sleep deprivation and consequent mild hallucination! Possibly the version on CD that I often listen to at night is correspondingly slow in those movements: can't put my hand on it but I think it's the Kleiber.

The latest version of Sunday's TTN is now 5 hours 41mins long and seems to have just had the technical difficulties & filler removed.
I wonder if we'll ever get the missing start back?
