Been listening to SNO/Jarvi in No 9 again today. I cannot recommend all the Shostaokovich recordings they made together highly enough . 1,5,6,7,9 & 10 and the ballet suites are all excellent.

Presumably the 1960s Melodiya recording with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra? I bought that LP in the week that Shostakovich died in August 1975. It was available as a HMV download at one time but mine got lost when a laptop suddenly packed in.Originally posted by Nick Armstrong View PostWot no Svetlanov?
There is/was a live recording of the (in)famous 1968 Prom performance available on ICA Classics which I have. It's a terrific performance, too."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

I was at an orchestral rehearsal and returned to my fiddle case to find an Lp of this recording in the music pocket. It was a disc in a sleeve that had been part of a boxed set. There was nothing to identify the donor and no one I asked had any knowledge of it. I was never asked about it and I’ve still got it. Thirty five years later and I still feel slightly guilty that there’s a box set with that Lp missing.Originally posted by Petrushka View Post

I listened to the V Petrenko yesterday. It really is very good indeed, VP managing the long and difficult first movement extremely well. It’s also very well recorded, giving a credible impression of an orchestra in a concert hall. Given that Naxos is hardly an audiophile label, this aspect added to my enjoyment considerably.

I was sure I had the Shipway . I thought I had bought it after being very impressed by his Tring CD of Mahler 5 . I couldn’t find it but bought a very cheap secondhand copy off Amazon . It’s an absolute belter of a performance superbly played by the RPO . No wonder you rate it so highly.Originally posted by Gargoyle View PostI have 2 CDs of the tenth, Ancerl and Shipway. I prefer the Shipway. The recorded sound on the Ancerl gets in the way, for me.
