Or program (sic) the player to play only the tracks corresponding to S3?

VW 4.5 and 6 was suggested many years ago by Michael Kennedy but Andrew Manze's Prom about ten years ago was the first time I heard them done together. In my old tape recording days I had the fifth starting a few sconds after the end of the fourth and that was quite nice!

I'm very much against 'tampering' with works in the way mentioned (inserting folk-songs ,etc.).There was a pianist recently who seemed offended when he was criticised for insertin his own improvisations into Chopin. The worst example recently was the bowdlerised version of Henry Wood's Sea Songs fantasia at the Proms. I think the only thing that's stopped them from doing this sort of thing on Radio 3 is that they so rarely play more than one movement of any work!

The two Boult cycles I have on the shelf have 3 sharing a disc with 5, and 4 sharing a disc with 6. This I find one acceptable way of not putting the onus on the listener to avoid potential nasty shocks.

Not sure I’d agree on Elgar’s Second Symphony, most recordings lacking in something.

I must revisit Boults last EMI recording, having much respected his Lyrita version.

            .
But surely not Vernon Handley/LPO........why, it doesn't even lack the organ (beautifully caught by engineer Mike Clements) which many/most others do!

Thanks for the reminder Roger, I probably didn’t fully appreciate the work when I last listened to that one.
