Vivaldi: Cello sonatas, on Oiseau-Lyre. Christoph Coin, Chris Hogwood and numerous other bowers and pluckers. Lovely to relax to on a warm aftternoon . I'd suggest it to Radio 3 for their 'calming ' programmes they'd probably only play the first three minutes before we had an advert for Doctor Who?.

Looking for Firebirds in my old vinyl I came across the Endymion/John Whitfield EMI, Dumbarton Oaks/Octet/Ebony Conc./Syms of Winds. Sounds superb - an early Andrew Keener production, with great engineering by Mike Clements. Bet Pulcinella has this one.
See this thread.
I nearly persuaded RichardB that it contained the best version of S of winds.

Yes, both versions, which is handy, and as Richard B said the Dumbarton Oaks is lovely. This Lp still plays flawlessly after 35 years, I'm very glad I didn't sell it - about half my collection went to the S/H vinyl section in the shop.....I have those pangs of regret over some....for example the Elgar Syms, 7 or 8 versions of each - I now only have Boult and Barbirolli on CD.....ah well there's always Qobuz....not the same though, is it.Originally posted by Pulcinella View Post
Edit. And Elgar's electrical recordings of the Syms in the two EMI boxes.

It was the first recording (LP) I had of the work, being introduced to it in college (in 1970/1971?) by a fellow student who had been bowled over by a Proms performance.Originally posted by oliver sudden View PostThere’s not a lot wrong with the Ančerl recording of the Janáček Sinfonietta, is there?
It's a piece that needs to be played with the volume up though! The joys of a detached house.

PS: 2017 Top recommendation in BaL (Richard Morison), I see.
PPS: I have this earlier release

I think there has been some debate about the relative merits (or demerits) of the Gold Edition remasterings.

Miaskovsky's 6th and 8th symphonies: the USSR S.O. , Yevgeny Svetlanov.
I think these are his two longest symphonies, at 64 and 54 minutes respectively. They both have long beautiful slow movements, a Miaskovsky trait.
When asked 'what does his music sound like ? ' I say, well, he is between Rachmaninov and Shostakovitch: more modern than the first, more romantic than the second.

The 14-CD Alto box set (a recommendation from teamsaint?) of the 27 symphonies was not only a bargain (I'm sure I paid less than this current price) but a revelation!Originally posted by smittims View PostMiaskovsky's 6th and 8th symphonies: the USSR S.O. , Yevgeny Svetlanov.

Some of my favourite French chamber music, and that which is often played as the pastis and olives are served.....a bit early - France Musique has Jazz Sous les Pommiers (the jazz festival from Coutances) at 18.00 UK time) so drinks then......but until then music for flute, harp and string trio
