    Ronald Corp RIP

Very sad to hear of the sudden death of conductor Ronald Corp, aged 74. He made so many fine recordings, particularly for Hyperion.

I've got all of the light music CDs he made for Hyperion and very much enjoy them.

He was a lovely man to work with, friendly and approachable as well as being a very fine musician. No age at all nowadays. He leaves a fine legacy of memories and recordings behind.

He composed as well. I've sung his 'Missa San Marco' and one or two other pieces.

A bit uncanny this for me - I was driving to Suffolk from Yorkshire this evening and having got bored with the CD in the player switched to Radio 3 to hear a pretty terrible Friday Night is Music Night . What for example the ghastly “ Impossibke Dream” has to do with VE Day was not explained .

As I listened to some of the light music stuff I just thought Ronald Corp does this do much better - RIP.

I knew his work from his light music recordings, immaculate performances of delightful music rescued from oblivion, and I didn't know he was a composer until recently. Only last week I was listening to his cello concerto played by Alice Neary. His death is a loss to music-making and my sympathy is to his family and friends.

A superb recording on Hyperion of Satie orchestral music with the New London Orchestra including Corp's own magical orchestration of two of the Gnossiennes.

I think the light music collections show off his talent brilliantly. Let's not forget either that wonderful rediscovery of Sidney Jones' The Geisha' he made, absolutely fizzing with humour, sheer delight.

I also love his version of Britten's Ceremony of Carols, coupled with 'Friday Afternoons' made for Naxos which has a youthful freshness.

Ronald Corp was a fine, adaptable musician. I once enjoyed the privilege of singing under him when he was a special, guest, conductor, there to ‘gee up’ the choir. He showed us new ideas and the imorovement in the choir was sustained once ‘our man’ returned. He will be missed.
