    Just listened with riveted attention to Brahms' Schumann Variations Op 9 on the Julius Katchen Complete Brahms Box which I've had for about 20 years. I must have played them before but they came across startlingly fresh. What a compelling fusion of the essence of the two composers, written for Clara just as Robert was finally losing his mind completely and being confined in an asylum and she was pregnant with their seventh child - a poignant context and an almost unbearably intense and elegaic composition.
