Subsequently I discovered that she recorded it for 'Blue' but left it on the discard pile. I suppose it sounds like it would have been more at home on 'Clouds' or 'Song for a Seagull'. Then I found this clip from Canadian TV in 1966, of Joni singing an earlier version of it. She can only be 22 or 23 here, and has such purity in the voice - her fellow performers are obviously astounded, though the bass player does a fine job keeping up.

    Got that lined up JC.

Recently bought a copy of Kevin Coyne's " masterpiece" Marjory Razorblade.

Only knew odds and sods, and I gather that his quality can be uneven, but this is a very fine LP indeed .

Tom Waits talks about the wonderful 'Tom Traubert's Blues' pretty recently from the look of things.

Top of my current playlist are German prog band Eloy. I have a few of their 70s albums and they make a nice change from the usual suspects.

I've never been a particular fan of Springsteen. I like a lot of his work, and love some, but generally don't sit down and listen to a whole record. This last couple of weeks I have been listening to Laura Barton's fine series on BBC Radio 4 - 'Legend: The Bruce Springsteen Story'. I have to say that it helped me when Mrs C and I went to the flicks to see the biopic 'Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere'. The film is set in the early eighties after 'The River' Tour, where Bruce returns to New Jersey and locks himself away. It is at this time he starts to record in his bedroom the songs which will become 'Nebraska'. In the process the film explores a bit of the troubled relationship between Bruce and his father, played rather broodingly by Stephen Graham.
I had never listened to 'Nebraska' , and gave it a listen this week, including some outtakes which have been released. It's stark and bleak and melancholy, and rather beautiful in places. I found it a strange circle - the radio series helped me get the film and the film helped me get the record. I will be listening to more of this excellent record in the days ahead.

I went for a walk this morning and was blinded by the light. The same thing happened round about the same time last year.

Did you walk because you decided you were not born to run? Those Autumn suns certainly challenge my reactolights!

No, it was because my good friend across the road told me that it was safer than dancing in the dark.

Thanks JC, that was really excellent.

I expect that Devo will want those suits back for their European tour next summer

Been listening to a lot of phase one Roxy Music recently. They had it all really, and Ferry’s vocal style must surely be one of the most influential in the history of the genre.
Also a lot of American Garage punk, a genre that throws up a surprising amount of quality.
Currently Kevin Coyne’s Marjory Razorblade , one I mentioned previously , a cult classic that is quite exceptional. Do try it if you don’t know it.

Thanks, ts. I'll look out the Coyne record and give it a spin. Last night I set out to give a listen to John Prine's 'The Missing Years' from 1991. I'd ordered it on an internet marketplace last week. However when I opened the case, inside was 'The Best of Paper Lace'. I like to think that some Paper Lace fan has given JP a spin and had a revelation. 'So this is what they did in the missing years after 'Billy Don't be a Hero'?
I've been listening to a couple of old Gram Parsons' records of late - so great, and with Emmylou in the background - one of the greatest of all backing singers, in my opinion.

My general prejudices didn't allow me to give it the time of day, ts. It was enough that I had to expend the energy to pack the whole thing back up and get it back to the PO. Do you feel I was a bit hasty there?

Her solo stuff is very good as are the Trio albums with Linda and Dolly - must also have another listen to her duet album with Mark Knopfler again drekly.
