    Alfvén, Hugo

    Alfvén, Hugo

He was born at Stockholm in 1872, and composed five grand symphonies, in the years 1897, 1898, 1905, 1919 and - after a long hiatus - 1953. They are comparable with those of our own contemporary masters, Elgar and company. All five symphonies are available to the public at Youtube.

The Fourth Symphony features a wordless soprano, which will not suit the taste of every music lover.

He commented that ‘my best ideas have come during my sea-voyages at night, and, in particular, the wild autumns have been my most wonderful times for composition’.

Alfvén considered his most important works to be the symphonies and the oratorio Herrans bön (‘The Lord's Prayer’), the last combining high and extended harmony with full contrapuntal artistry, notably in the quadruple fugue of the finale.

The Third Symphony is a fine work of the South, written in Italy.

I may have missed them, but I find neither concerti nor string quartettes nor piano quintettes listed among his productions, which is rather odd.
