Is the choice of hymn (What debt of sin that none can pay) a specific one for St Matthew, he being a tax collector?

      Nice one Pulcs.

Wasn't there a bit of bother at Llandaff a few years ago...i.e. lay clerks not being paid or something like that?
The last time (eons ago) that I attended a service at Llandaff, two senior choristers (not lay clerks) were 'conducting' the choir, i.e. indicating the beat.

That reminds me of an Evensong I once attended at St George's, Windsor, in 1969, when the 'starts and stops' were indicated by a treble on each side of the choir, one of them being a young Francis Grier. That was very 'old school', of course, and how things tended to be done in the pre 'DoM' days, when the organist played the organ and directed the choir from above by telepathy (the assistant organist being very much a subsidiary, called upon when required). Then again, more recently Sid Layton did similarly in the psalms at Trinity College, Cambridge to good effect.

Wow, what a thrilling, vibrant sound from the trebles that grabbed me from the first bar and kept me hooked throughout all the service. There was a palpable excitement in attacking what was quite a challenging sing. Whatever crisis the choir's endured is definitely over now. Looking at their Facebook page they have 20 girls and 20 boys, with 11 new singers admitted last week after a bonding Bushcraft session.Well the bonding has worked on today's evidence. A very enjoyable hour, crowned with a terrific voluntary. Thank you.

I trust the silence on these boards indicates this service has not been heard? I do strongly recommend to give it a listen; I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
