It will be nice to have a change from William Rockstro's Miserere too.

          No, but their website says:

          Ash Wednesday Evensong

This service of Evensong is planned to take place on Ash Wednesday, 14 February 2024 at 6.30pm.

There have been a number of Ash Wednesday broadcasts from other places in recent years. I recall for example St Alban's Cathedral and a rather eccentric interpretation of Allegri's Miserere from New College Oxford.

I wonder whether it is to avoid two broadcasts from St John's in the space of a few weeks, if they are also broadcasting a Passiontide service on the BBC as they often do.

I don't think there's any 'deeper' meaning to it: is it not just the case that—unlike the Advent Sunday and Christmas Eve ‘specials’ respectively from John’s and King’s—the Ash Wednesday broadcast is fixed at John’s only every other year and moves around on the ‘off’ years?

ETA: Here's where Radio 3's Ash Wednesday Evensongs have come from this century:
              2024 - Guildford
              2023 - John’s
              2022 - Lincoln Cathedral
              2021 - John’s (a rebroadcast, originally from 2019)
              2020 - Temple Church
              2019 - John’s
              2018 - New College
              2017 - John’s
              2016 - Temple Church
              2015 - John’s
              2014 - Gloucester
              2013 - John’s
              2012 - Hereford
              2011 - John’s
2010 - Liverpool Met (Mass, not Evensong)
              2009 - John’s
              2008 - St Albans
              2007 - John’s
              2006 - John’s
2005 - Westminster Cathedral (Vespers, not Evensong)
              2004 - John’s
              2003 - John’s
              2002 - New College
              2001 - John’s
              2000 - John’s

Apparently the cathedral is currently on a hill overlooking the A3. Are there plans for it to be moved?

Didn't you know where the cathedral was?
Or is it the fact that it might start sliding down the hill during the broadcast?

(PS: Yes, of course you're thanking Benjamin!)

Very nice - but to be fair, listening just now via Sounds, I think the phrase actually used (though not very clearly enunciated) was "prominently located".

Guildford did a splendid job, however the total amount of wrong stresses in MacMillan's Miserere is quite embarassing for a composer regarded as one of the finest in the country.

Must admit I didn’t miss Johns at all and this was refreshing for Ash Wednesday.
