Would be difficult for the commentator to escape from that!

Any attempt to flee would be stymied by a cry of 'out' from the island's newly installed, Wimbledon-inspired, Electronic Escape Detector (assuming, of course, that it hadn't been accidentally switched off).

Received my first publishers rejection letter today. Not happy.
        Best regards,

You've been spoilt - I never had an acceptance
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

This, presumably installed under instruction from the orange-tinted toddler in the White House in accordance with his new MAGA (Make Alcartraz Gated Again) directive...unless, of course, he's abandoned it in the last 5 mins, as seems habitual...

An Italian region has invited the pro-Putin conductor, signalling a rehabilitation despite no sign of an end to the war.

Pity the orchestra that's going to have to put up with him, he's not known for treating players with respect.

I feel I'm getting more like Ed Reardon every day! Too much of this AI stuff. Phone up to get help with a service or booking, and then what do you get ... one or all of the following ...

                        1. "Do you know that you can do what you want quickly via our website?" Expletive deleted .... "why do you think I'm phoning for human assistance - not everything can be done via the website. [More expletives]".

                        2. "I'm Bob, how can I help you?" "Are you a robbot or a human?" "Do you want to make a booking?" .... Blah blah, and then it all goes belly up. "Oh, FGS - I want to speak to a real human - you stupid robot ...." ... "Oh - I'm sorry, I thought I was talking to a robot voice ...."
                        3. "Say which of the following you want- Confirm - Amend - other " etc. ""FFS I want to talk to a real human being". [repeat this a few times] - Eventually you will be put in a queue to speak to someone - "The expected wait time is more than 30 minutes" - followed by dreadful music interspersed with periodic announcements "Do you know that you can .... "

Really I think "modern living" has just gone too far!

It's certainly turning me into Victor Meldrew.

This is because you have a functioning brain. Before too long the human species will be either the minority In Control or the teeming majority which has reverted to the state of wild beast, though still able to drink Coca Cola and munch Pringles..

... another related ... for car hire ...

Apart from DVLA codes which are hardly of any use for anything else, we get asked to produce several "Utility Bills" - dated within 3 months.

I suppose that's because the US [where some of the companies are based] is so backward that they don't use direct debit or other means of payment.

I get a once a year request for Council Tax, the electricity bill is paid by mrs d - again on direct debit from her account, we don't have gas or any other "utility" payments.
Almost all our payments are done automatically via direct debits, or in some cases by bank transfer - and many requests for payment don't actually show the address.

Car hire companies may just have to make do with bank statements or other letters from banks showing my address - with all the amounts redacted!

Sadly I have a few more recent examples where "modern living" - embodied by a "just download the app" approach fails miserably.
