Thinking about it, it is not impossible that I might utter 'ohmygod' but it would probably come out in an exaggerated voice, maybe with a put-on American accent indicating that I am just borrowing the phrase for whimsical effect. As a square 70 something bloke, it would be odd if it were part of my normal usage.Originally posted by french frank View Post
I honestly hadn't realised how much I've been missing by not having a television
It may be that girls and women react more spontaneously than men, but OMG (which maye be considered a mild profanity by some) has simply replaced Gosh! Golly! Gordon Bennett! Gorblimey! Crikey! Cripes! Crumbs! Some are possibly used (if at all nowadays) more by men than women. I suspect the words more used by men are simply kept off the television screens and seldom encountered unless people frequent certain environments.

It’s used a lot by American women. It carries much more force over there as the majority of Americans are Christians.Originally posted by french frank View Post

Or only the women? It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

' you've been watching Neighbours too much, smittims! Just as listening to Woman's Hour reinforces your perceptions about feminists. Does that make sense?[/QUOTE]
It makes sense but it's not accurate . I don't recall, anyone saying 'OmyGod' inn Neighbours , but the girls I hear saying it have been watching Friends .
Woman's Hour tells me what feminists are saying, not what I think about them.
My O-H still says 'Gordon Bennett'. I still say 'By Jove'.

Amazon has abandoned Neighbours 2.0, so the last-ever episode, which was filmed in July, will be shown in the UK on Channel 5 in December.Last edited by LMcD; 11-10-25, 13:52.

Oh well done on the reviews thing. not easy to do.Originally posted by Jonathan View PostI have a cold, first time in 3 years
Not happy.
But, under the heading of good news, the two fraudulent reviews of my first book on Amazon have been expunged! Great

I only picked on those two examples because you've mentioned that you watch/listen to them. I've never watched Neighbours or Friends. Or EastEnders (how out of touch can anyone be?). Or listened to Woman's Hour. They're outside my fields of interest.Originally posted by smittims View PostIt makes sense but it's not accurate . But are they 'feminists' at all or are they just putting the 'woman's point of view' - that might be expected in a programme called Woman's Hour - and you equate that with feminism?Originally posted by smittims View PostWoman's Hour tells me what feminists are saying, not what I think about them.

Commiserations to Jonathan on his cold (and rejoicings on his Amazon result) to get back to the topic

No more please as I should have a problem verifying what you say.Originally posted by smittims View PostNo, they are self-confessed feminists , the ones I mention anyway.
What is 'the woman's point of view' anyway? There are millions , billions of women. I suspect that many of them are not feminists in the Mary Beard sense and wish they would shut up . More on this if you wish.
Also we'll become the source of a new Grumble

Got my letter yesterday telling me I was about to receive a Winter Fuel Supplement of £200 into my bank account. Lower down the page it said this was because I was 1) over 65 and 2) no one else in my house would be receiving it.
Turn over the letter- on the other side it says the full amount will be recovered by HMRC for anyone with an income over £35,000.
SO - why send it to me in the first place?

To say nothing about the cost of all the administration. Can DWP not talk to HMRC before issuing the payments?Originally posted by Old Grumpy View PostGot my letter yesterday telling me I was about to receive a Winter Fuel Supplement of £200 into my bank account. Presumably it will be collected by a change in your tax code, so in monthly instalments over next tax year.
Treat it as a kindly interest-free loan from HMG.
