Well 8th, you may enjoy the MP from a couple of weeks back. I'm catching up on the Radio 3 Breakfast bus replacement service after the hols, and this morning I've been listening to Angeline Morrison's 'Music Planet'. She's a folk singer with Afro-Caribbean and Hebridean roots apparently. It felt like quite a serious version of the programme as Angeline gave us music from around the world and round the corner, focussing on unaccompanied singing, and music of Caribbean origin. Some fabulous songs in there, as well as some new releases - she has worked hard to put this show together. Sometimes in the summer, when the regular presenters are off sunning themselves, someone is brought off the bench to give a differnet perspective - it doesn't always work, but this worked for me. Two weeks left to listen - I'm going to go off and investigate her Prom from Gateshead - in the meantime here's the link to her 'Music Planet'.

Nigeria's The Cavemen were on KT's 'Music Planet' this week as part of the 'Return Journey' feature. This was ahead of their Prom tomorrow evening (Tuesday 12th) where they'll be playing their brand of highlife - apparently they have played with 'everyone from Wizkid to Angélique Kidjo and Davido', whatever that's supposed to mean. That's the same evening that Anoushka Shankar is on - busy night, I suppose, or more R3 Breakfast avoidance material on Sounds.
KT played a track from the new Kasse Mady Diabate record which he started and his daughter, Hawa Kasse Mady Diabaté, finished following his untimely death. Also remembered in a new release is Amadou Bagayoko as his wife Mariam releases material by the Malian duo, recorded before his death earlier this year. I really enjoyed the Welsh piece from Cerys Hafana and the Neapolitan singer LA NIÑA with her song 'Pica Pica'. Plenty good stuff, I thought...keep it up MP.

        Music Planet this evening.

Alice Zawadzki deserves a greater exposure IMV. A very talented artist. She presented 'Round Midnight recently.

I very much enjoyed the Global Encounters session between Indian ghatam virtuoso Giridhar Udupa, and Polish violinist and singer Kasia Kapela, and also their discussion with KT, on this morning's Radio 3 Breakfast replacement service. Two very fine musicians - it did feel like a very positive encounter to me.There were some lovely reminders of Sheila Chandra in there too in the vocals of Giridhar.

Add in some really unusual Zydeco, the wonderful Harp of David and new stuff from Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino and I had a perfectly enjoyable accompaniment to this morning's bowl of cereal.

Yes, KT edges ahead once again in the competition with LK....a particularly fine ep.

I've come to the conclusion that I enjoy 'Music Planet' on a weekday morning in preference to Saturday evening...or whatever else BBC Radio 3 has to offer at that point in the week. KT was in control of the wheels of steel this week promising us cosy sounds to ease us into autumn. Songs about waiting for porridge or firing up the sauna, for example. A great bit of Georgian choir, Ensemble Basiani, was in there, which always seems to hit me in the sweet spot. Mind you, there was a completely crazy bit of Bulgarian dance band from Ivo Papasov which had me on edge - it certainly didn't make me feel cosy. A very pleasant hour.

Not for me - had to switch it off. Mainly because after a while I was struck by the thought that this was what Eurovision could have sounded like if they had stuck in a different space/time continuum.
After that, everything I heard reinforced that thought. Turns out I don't like alt. imagined Eurovision either. Bring back Lopa I say...

KT's first 'Music Planet' of the new year and we get a repeat of three tracks from Bogota courtesy of Colombian trio, Los Pirañas...at least I'm pretty sure I've heard it before. Actually, I could be wrong, but the whole show may have been a repeat. Yep! Just checked and it's a repeat from March of last year; and I thought I was having Deja Vu.

Kathryn took us on a roadtrip across the U.S. this week - some fine tunes in there - Hayes and Cahill, Aster Aweke, Los Originarios del Plan among them - hard to cover everything, but looks like they worked hard at it. Entertaining replacement from morning R3 fare.

Kathryn's many fans may not know that she can currently be heard in Sundays on Radio4extra playing the musical interlude in repeats of Richard Stilgoe's show . On last Sunday's episode she can be heard introducing the two melodies she plays on the Northumbrian Pipes. It's on AT 1000 GMT and repeated thereafter.

KT had a pre Burns special this weekend and played some fine tunes - quite a few Scottish including Sheena Wellington's wonderful performance of 'A Man's A Man' from the opening of the Scottish Parliament. There were some fine tunes throughout the programme.
A highlight of a very enjoyable programme for me, came at the end - someone I had never heard of before, Pelengana Blo from the Hunter people of Mali performing 'Niangara' - hadn't heard anything quite like it, I don't think - I believe he plays the Donso ngoni. It seems that he has given up recording, concentrating instead on playing at Hunter rituals - I think that's what Kathryn said. Here he is:
