    Autonomous vehicles still dangerous

There are still too many issues re so-called driverless cars.

The Snohomish man had set his car on Autopilot and was looking at his cellphone when he struck a motorcyclist on Highway 522 on Friday, court records show.

Prima facie, I would be worried about not being able to act to avoid being hit. I would fear being mentally ill-equipped in such circumstances having got used to not being in control. That has wider implications too in terms of the importance of always having a sense of agency being a personal moral imperative. On the one hand we're handing over responsibilities for decision making to an impersonal entity while on the other expected to be at the instant whim of every phone call the instant it happens, which, as a package, must surely have debilitating psychological consequences, in the long run at least. .
